Part 1.
Self-Presentation is a communication technique we use to reveal our identities to those around us (Alberts, 2009). What do I want people to think of me? That is a hard question. I use to care about that. I always wanted people to like me. It is very superficial. As I have gotten older and more mature, I do not care really what others think. For me it is how I want to see myself. I think in turn that puts more pressure on me to make sure I am happy. As long as I know I did everything to the best of my ability, I am happy with that. With me I want to see myself as a man. What being a man to me is being able to take care of your family, being able to figure out the solution to any problem, and being able to handle any situation? I want to take pride in knowing that I am being the best man I can be. I am not talking about being cocky, over confident, or having an ego. When I was a kid I really looked up to my father. He is a great man. He never panicked when something happened. He was always able to stay level headed and figure out a solution to the problem. One of his most admirable traits is that he never ran from a problem. He was always able to carry the burden on his shoulders and overcome any obstacle. That builds respect. He was always there for me and my sister, and took care of us. Now that I have a wife and two small children, that is how I want to see myself. I want to have that self-pride and respect. I think that carries into work as well. Self-presentation is a part of our everyday life, (Kenrick, 1999). From how we dress, why we work out, to the car we drive, or why we attend the company party (Carter, 2006). I think people put too much emphasis on self-presentation in our society. That is a major reason why have all these fake reality shows on television. Every one cares too much what other people think...
