Abstract
BNP Pariba’s is targeting the Indonesian market as part of its expansion strategy with regards to its international retail banking unit. This paper follows a strategic analysis approach to understand the bank’s strategic position by assessing the external as well as the internal factors that will impact the bank’s decision (Johnson, Scholes and Whittington, 2008). The paper starts by identifying and evaluating the characteristics of the external environment that the bank will operate in using PESTEL analysis. Once the macro-environment is being assessed the analysis then studies the attractiveness of the Indonesian banking industry to BNP using the Porter’s five forces model. This will capture the Micro-Environmental aspect of the analysis. After assessing the industry and competitiveness, a SWOT analysis will be performed in order to link the external and internal factors and then formulate a strategy and determine the actions that BNP should take in light of internal capabilities as well as external opportunities and challenges.
