September 11, 2001: The Memorial On the day of September 11, 2001, four jet airliners were hijacked; two of them were flown into the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The first plane, American Airlines flight 11, hit the north tower at 8:46 A.M., and the second, United Airlines flight 175, hitting the south tower at 9:02 A.M. The total number of fatalities of this catastrophe was 2,998 making this the biggest terrorist attack to ever happen on American soil (CNN). After all of this devastation camethe question of whether or not to put a memorial where the towers used to stand. After the attacks, temporary memorials were scattered everywhere around ground zero, but plans for a permanent memorial were put on hold. After the attacks, many people’s lives everywhere, not just New Yorkers’, were changed forever. With that great of devastation millions of people across the country were affected by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Many people living in New York witnessed these attacks. Yvonne Burton, a New Yorker and an eyewitness to the terrorist attacks says that “After hearing sirens and explosions this morning, I walked into my living room to find that both twin Nevada 02 Nevada 03 Another type of memorial that was has been set up was the “sphere” that used to stand in the plaza of the World Trade Center. Ironically, the sphere meant to symbolize world peace. The piece of artwork was pulled from the ruble and put in New York’s Battery Park. Surrounding it are American flags, Canadian flags, and even French flags. Citizens come to visit this memorial and put flowers and cards around it as well. It stands, damaged, but not destroyed and shows the strength of the people of New York- they may be damaged, but not destroyed.
