Love, a strong positive emotion of regard and affection, has been the core of many classic stories, poems and movies. It has been important in many fiction stories as well as real life. Love may involve several different emotions from happy to sad and anxious to angry. In a few of the stories that we have read, love has played in completely different roles. Though the word is commonly used and interpreted, many people view it completely different. Love can be dysfunctional in many relationships too, like the stories of “Shiloh”, “The Story of an Hour”, and “Astronomers Wife.”
In “Shiloh,” Norma Jean was unhappy but did not realize it. She was living her life while bothered about the situation with Leroy. After Leroy’s accident, neither knew if Leroy would ever return to work. Norma Jean’s role became the prominent male of the family. She was working to support them and she was also lifting weights. She was attending adult education composition classes and spending time learning the organ. On the other hand, Leroy was sitting around smoking marijuana and making things from craft kits. After so many years seeing her husband so seldom, she is uncomfortable seeing him home all the time. Norma Jean started smoking, and it was not until her mom caught her that she had an epiphany and realized she was very dissatisfied with her life. She is not interested in the log cabin that Leroy is ranting about building her. She is also tired of her mother who is getting too involved in her relationship. While on their trip to Shiloh, she tells Leroy that it is over and she wants to leave him. Leroy is confused, not knowing what is going on. It seems as though Leroy does not know his wife at all, he was away so often that she is a stranger. If Leroy was around more often, and took more interest in Norma Jean’s life, it could have saved their relationship.
