Should Social Media be Banned in the Workplace?

In today’s society, social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and others are a part of our everyday lives; it becomes more difficult to separate our online social lives with the way we socialize with the people around us (family, friends, and co-workers). The purpose of this paper is to take a closer look at social media sites (like those listed above) and its effect of workplace productivity. Which brings up the question employers have struggled with: Should social media sites be banned it the workplace? For this study we randomly selected 200 employees from two different companies. And then we had them complete a five question survey on their views and uses of social media while at work. Then we examined whether or not social media has any value to the employers. We will also look and see if there can be a balance between what the employers want and what the employees want.
This paper examines the use of social media in the workplace and its effects on productivity. The authors talk about the explosion in social media and social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and others, The researcher also discuss how people are using them more and more in their everyday lives, even while they are at work. Research has started examining the potential benefits and risks to employers. Which brings up the question – Should Social Media be Banned in the Workplace?
Social media refers to the collective of online communities dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. This is where people can create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas all from the comfort of their living room.
