Our society is facing a huge crisis, a crisis that goes on undetected in our houses, schools, and playgrounds. You or your neighbor may participate unknowingly. What I am referring to is prescription-drug abuse. And the fact we are obsessed with short cuts to happiness and the fabled “silver bullet”. And that we are turning into a drug dependant society.
Since around the early 90’s, the use of prescription drugs has risen at an alarming rate. The use varies from weight loss, to hair loss to matters pertaining to ADD and bi-polarism. Now I am someone who grew up during the 90’s, having been born in 1988. I grew up during the “drug boom”. But unlike a lot of kids and teens today who are using prescription drugs, I know people who actually need them. They have been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, Bi-polarism and Insomnia. But kids these days fall into 1 of 2 categories, which are the following: The users; which do not have any of the aforementioned diagnoses, but choose to use them as a means for something else. Such as, snorting Ritalin for a test, rather than studying and leaving the meds for someone else, or using the sleep and attention deficit meds with marijuana. Teens seem to be the biggest abusers of this, mainly in high school. Found in the stoner groups. And the second group being the unknowns, meaning they use meds only because they think they do, not because they actually do. For example, someone is having a hard time focusing at work, they think is something immediately wrong with them. When it’s possible that they simply having something on their minds, this kind of person assumes that they have the ADD. So they go by the commercials that come on almost endlessly, and call there doctor and say that they need to be medicated simply because they cannot focus.
