My first character was Olaudah Equiano, he was a captured slave whose defining moment was his journey on a slave ship.” I was soon put down under the decks and there I was received such a salutation in my nostrils as I had ever experienced in my life”. This quote shows the representation of how eye opening life was on the ship and the things that his mind had to vision during this horrific event. My second character was Harriet Jacobs she was a slave that ran away and was hiding no more than 500 yards from her owner. Her defining moment was hiding in her grandmother’s attic.” It was impossible for me to move into an erect position”. The quote that was stated by Jacobs showed how cruel and gruesome the houses that the slaves were stationed in and had to make a living in. My last character was Frederick Douglas who was an abused slave who had little to no energy and was brutally abused. His defining moment was fighting back to the physical abuse.” He then gave me a savage kick to the side and told me to get up”. The slaves didn’t always just obey their owners; they fought back for their rights and the pursuit of freeness. IF they were to kill their owner or at least injury him/her, they would be able to make a run for it to run to the northern states to become free. They have to escape to the north because slavery wasn’t enforced or dictated. All three slaves lived very different lives because of the different treatment they received from the owners. Even though they were owned and operated differently they all had one thing in common and that was that they were all physically and mentally controlled. Olaudah Equiano said, “But I still feared that I should be put to death the white people looked and acted as I thought”. Harriet Jacobs also quoted “yet I would have chosen this rather than my lot as a slave”.
