Many people do not realize the consequences of sleep deprivation could be deadly. The sleep that we don’t get each day adds up to a cumulative debt that we must repay in order to function at full capacity says according to national sleep specialists (461). Sleep debt is another term we use for sleep loss which accumulates over time (501). Sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on a person’s physical, mental, and emotional status.
There are many causes of sleep deprivation. For instance, many people’s bodies do not adapt to the new time change, which can cause them to lose sleep (492). Technology plays a big role in adolescents losing sleep. Many teens stay up all night texting and talking away on their cell phones or on their laptops. Inconsistent scheduling can cause confusion in a person bed routine. Jobs, school, and extracurricular activities can cause people not to get enough sleep (491). Social life is something many teens struggle to keep up with due to school and jobs, therefore many teens have to do things late at night which causes them to lose sleep. Early school times have always been an issue to students and teachers. Many people think school should be started later than it is so kids could get more sleep and be more focus when they get there(484).
Sleep debt physically affects a person. Many people who lose sleep have slow reaction and cannot perform well. For example, school athletes must get enough sleep the night before a big game or their reactions and performance will not accomplish their goal to win. Also,” more than one quarter(28)% of adolescents say they’re too tired to exercise” (483).People who lack energy do not receive enough sleep to be able to perform their activities during the day. School and jobs are places that require energy to be able to perform well on their task. Weight gain and obesity is a consequence from sleep debt.
