If we had a moment to stop and look at exactly how our towns are and how they used to be surly there would be significant changes that took place within the past fifty years. Having things such as large corporal businesses rather than the small family owned business which was forced to shut down. We may be able to look at our town and say what happened to the physical attributes which used to make us, us? Everything is “improving” and as a country we continue to lean toward this trend of greater urbanization, when essentially what gives us character are our smaller towns. While putting population into consideration, other things such as a friendly and close relationship with many others excluding family, and strong interest in sports is what makes a residence a small town. It’s the great feeling of being at home, going to the same spot to hang out, being able to depend on others around you and they have that same dependability on you. We may be urbanizing to look like larger cities but even with the changes being made you can’t take the small town feel out of what already is a small town.
Odessa Texas has built a reputation of the small town with big talent in school sporting events. The crazy thing is that Odessa contains a population of approximately 100,800 people. If we were given boundaries to what is and what isn’t a small town then surely this population would be well over the recommended amount. If everything now a day has turned into statistical reasoning, which it shouldn’t, then a foreigner to this town would look only at the population and say that’s a good size city. When actually if you look beneath the numbers and figures then you would quickly recognize that this town possesses all of the examples of what I feel is a small town. Like everything it is urbanizing yes, but it still contains a small town feel and has that friendly vibe along with being big on sports and containing several hang out spots where everyone goes.
