People are judged every day by what they wear, their hairstyles, and how they act. The way others react to us is how they categorize us into their heads. This person is considered rich or poor, pretty or ugly, nice or snobby. Even though we don’t always recognize this because it is basically second nature, we are categorizing this person in our own social class system. In America today, there is a very strong social class system, but this class system is formed by each individual. In Victorian England’s class system however, everyone knew where they were located in the class system. In America today it is hard sometimes to really know where one is located in the class system, and but it is also easier to move up in social class compared to the mobility within the social class system in Victorian England.
In Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, it was extremely rare to see someone like Pip move up in social class and people like Pumblechook were jealous of him. With that being said, it still takes an exceeding amount of heart and desire to want better for you. My father lived in the lower-middle class area. He went to a public school and couldn’t afford a Catholic school. He went to a public high school and had to bike to school every day because they couldn’t afford a car. My dad was made fun of and people judged him for what he didn’t have and not for the heart and motivation to work that he did have. At high school, he put all of his focus on academics and basketball. He would sometimes pull all-nighters because he wanted every homework assignment to be perfect and wanted to get straight A’s so badly. It turns out that he did receive the grades he wanted. He was very successful in college and was offered a job at Accenture. It was an amazing opportunity, but he was offered a low paying job. He was very frugal and saved over 50% of what he earned.
