Social Contract

What's a socially responsible company? It is a company that serves the greater good. It serves its customers by selling something of superb quality at affordable prices thus creating great value. UPS serves its workers by providing good jobs, benefits and a positive work environment by enforcing ethical behavior, treating all employees with respect and dignity while embracing diversity. Moreover, UPS serves its owners by generating profits and the rest of the population by making the world of logistics and transportation a better place (Gunther, 2006).

UPS has been on top of the Forbes Magazine and CNN Money‘s Most Admired List of top ten socially responsible firms for the third consecutive year. UPS also known as “Big Brown” does well for its workers, the environment and the global economy .This is accomplished by delivering 14.8 million packages a day to more than 200 countries. According to Marc Gunther, senior writer for Forbes Magazine (2006, February 26, p.1), if UPS were to shut down,” much of global commerce would grind to a halt”.
UPS generates revenues of approximately $42.6 billion dollars a year (UPS.com, 2011). The Atlanta-based company is a leader in sustainability and philanthropy. It strives to increase the fuel efficiency and decrease the emissions of its very large fleet. They intent to accomplish that goal in part by utilizing about 1,500 alternative fuel vehicles that are powered by electricity, natural gas, propane and hydrogen. Moreover, UPS's corporate foundation gave away about $43 million last year, focusing on hunger, literacy and voluntarism (Gunther, 2006).
