My whole life, since I was born in the 90’s, there have been social movements about almost anything one can think of. One of the biggest social movements in society today would have to do with Gay couples/marriage. I myself know a lot of gay/lesbian couples and the reason I choose this topic on social movements is because Gay rights and things of this nature have had a big impact throughout my life. The article I choose was “This is about people dying: The Tactics of Early ACT UP and Lesbian Avengers in New York City.” Gays today still have a big problem they have to face even after so many have come out. This would be the problem with aids and dealing with the stereotypes of being gay. Mostly men have this issue, but being gay/lesbian and coming out is one thing but also dealing with the fact that “straight” people think all feminine men are gay, that all gay men have aids, that being gay is bad and evil is another.
The reason I choose this article is because I feel that it relates to a lot of people in my life in a way. I know a lot of gay, bisexual, and lesbian couples and people but still today it is a bit hard for them to completely come out without worrying about dealing with the hardships of family, friends, and society and how they are viewed or stereotyped. Another reason I choose this article is because in this present time there is a great amount of discrimination against gays/lesbian couples about being married and or getting married.
This article relates greatly to California social issues because right now at this time the case against gay marriage is still going on and gay marriage is illegal because ever since Proposition 8 was passed people have been trying to pass a new CA constitutional law to bring back the same sex marriage license granting, which was started on June 16th, 2008 but is now inactive. This article is a perfect article that deals with one of the main California social issues today.
