Once again a new craze of communication has struck among people today. From cell phones, to texting, to instant messaging and now there is social networking. However, unlike cell phones, these sites have been starting many controversies on everything from who is on your “Top Friends” list to privacy issues. These sites have been accepted among teens as apart of their culture today, yet many parents and seniors are curious or concerned. Many who are concerned claim that these sites are dangerous, hurtful, and overall unhealthy. Seniors should accept the use of social networking sites because they allow people to express themselves, share their ideas, stay connected to people, and be involved.
A main reason why people use social networking sites is to stay in touch with people. Many people would agree with editor Christine Rosen, who formally opposes the use of social networking sites, when she admits, “ [social networking sites] makes it possible to stay in contact with a wider circle of offline acquaintances than might have been possible in the era before Facebook. Friends you haven’t seen in years, old buddies from elementary school, people you might have (should have?) fallen out of touch with- it is now easier than ever to reconnect to those people.” He also adds that he especially likes that he can see the pictures they post so he can see what they have been doing. However, Rosen also claims that social networking sites, “favor interaction of greater quantity but less quality.” Rosen does make a good point that social networking gives you quantity over quality, but I think less quality is a fair price to pay for having an easy and more convenient way to communicate.
