Essay 1

The question was asked why we were in this class and or what we hoped to get out of it on the first day. My answer was, that psychology did not work out with me so that was why I was here, but also that society fascinated me. I was not very excited for this class and especially not when I found out that there would be papers due. I hate papers, and papers hate me. I am the best procrastinator that you will ever meet; literally right now it is Thursday night at 8:37 pm before the paper is due at 10 am tomorrow morning. My not so hyped about this class attitude started to diminish once you started teaching. You are one of the few professors that I have ever had that can relate to us, cut out the bullshit, and help us understand the importance of your lessons. You are whole-heartedly here to help us learn and I can actually follow you throughout your lectures/interactions.
When you started to talk about all the sociologists in the beginning I was wondering when it would get interesting. Then you spoke of Charles Lyell who was a devote Christian that while doing research discovers that the tectonic plates and continents make the earth millions of years old which was not anything close to what the bible says. And I thought to myself shit this guys in trouble, because back then everyone (for the most part) believed in God and that the bible was life and all that was needed. Then Charles Darwin comes along and studies the Galapagos Island and sees that animals change to adapt and therefor people change to adapt. Whoa dude, slow down with the whole “we evolved from monkeys’ idea”, Jesus wouldn’t like that, and that is not in the bible. Then comes Auguste Comte declaring himself a “social physicist” and worshipped Issac Newton. He believed that sociology was the “Queen of all sciences”, meaning that you had to be an expert in Math, physics, chemistry, biology, psychology and then, and only then, could you completely understand sociology.
