According to International Spa Association (ISPA, n.d.), “Spas are entities devoted to enhancing overall well-being through a variety of professional services that encourage the renewal of mind, body and spirit.” Spa resorts seemed to be a place to relax and disconnect from the world as people can recharge their mind, body and spirit. It is an opportunity to bring people’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual selves back into alignment.
In recent years, “Spa” suddenly became a hot topic in the city. Nowadays intellectuals always fastidious about “quality of life”, spa resort became one of their favorites and many people would like to spend their whole vacation there. However, according to Intelligent Spas’ research (Intelligent Spas, n.d.), 1/4 females and 1/3 males visited a spa one or 2 times per year, very few people visit a spa once a month. As identifying a huge opportunity to increase spa repeat visitation, studying different spa resorts’ practices and operations are necessary for the hospitality industry to do better.
Reasons of choosing Banyan Tree Phuket and Hilton Sanya Resort and Spa to be our report’s targets simply based on our group’s observation and interview conducted with our friends and relatives: Some of the spa-goers introduced and suggested our group to use Banyan Tree Phuket as our target as this resort provides excellent spa services; One of our group mates got a lottery which first prize is free stay in Banyan Tree Phuket; One of our group mates’ relatives stay in Hainan and can provide information of resorts there…etc. Several methods are used for collecting data and information in this report. Observation and interviews contributes most part of the primary sources. Internet is also widely used for understanding two resort’s background and collecting guests’ comments as secondary sources.
