Religious Practices
Dominican Republicans are considered to be people whom practice the Roman Catholic faith and they attend church on a regular basis. They teach their children the importance of asking for a blessing before greeting others. Their worship service consists of family, bible teachings and to be economical independent. This is different from most churches because the primary focus is not on just your family; it is on God. The Dominicans also practice Voodoo because it was originated with African slaves and the Dominicans have continued the practice. The Dominicans believe that every person has a spirit inside that rewards them with help and then punishes him or her with sickness. They also believe in different remedies and often consult with a person whom is very spiritually inclined. Lastly, they use herbs and other natural objects to heal their bodies in which this is the witch doctor. Due to this belief they feel they have the power to get rid of bad spirits that are in others (Alvarez-Lopez, Baver, Weisman, Hernandez & Lopez, 1997).
Puerto Rico people practice the Catholic and Protestant religion. There is an 85% of Puerto Ricans practice Catholic and the reason why there are not a 100% of the people is due to commonwealth of the United States. The overall percentage of people in the United States indicates that only 8% is protestant religion, 3% are other religions that no one knows about and 2.3% are people who do not study religion at all (Everyculture, 2013). Overall Puerto Rico is a very religious country and the people whom live there are very involved in religious beliefs and practices. With all the other religions Puerto Ricans are predominately practice the catholic religion. They still believe in myths like the evil eye, saint’s miracles, faith healing and witchcraft.
