Staffing and hiring is a very important part for a company and must be done correctly. It is a “critical organizational function concerned with the acquisition, development, and retention o the organization’s workforce (p. 6)” “Staffing is the process of acquiring, deploying, and retaining a workforce of sufficient quantity and quality to create positive impacts on the organization’s effectiveness (p. 7).” It is important to find workers who are knowledgeable, skilled, and have the ability to perform well. These qualities are also known as KSAO’s, which stand for knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. Finding the right workers for your company is a key to success. These workers should be qualified for the job and understand the company value, goals, duties, etc. “There is a need for a match between the person and the job. To the extent that the match is good, it will likely have a positive impact on HR outcomes, particularly attraction of job applications, job performance, retention, attendance, and satisfaction (p. 17).” It is also important to have a balance between the job requirements and job rewards to keep up motivation.
Organizations also want to have their staffing needs fully anticipated for both short term and long term goal, but optimizing both goals is difficult, so trade-offs are often required. This may mean “balancing addressing short term labor shortages with the identification and development of talent for the long term (p. 29).” Companies cannot just focus on what is happening now, or in the short term because it will affect them in the long run. “Organizations with a longer view of their staffing needs have put in place talent management programs (p. 30).” This may mean thinking about strategic talent, or future skill, needs for the entire organization.
