The book starts out with to young boys named Leo and Kevin. They are starting school at Mica Area High School. The first day was amazing because they meet a strange girl named Stargirl. She stood out to everybody because of the way she dressed, the attitude she had, the things she did, and the way she acted. She also carried an ukulele which looked like a guitar and a pet rat. On the day of someones birthday she would stop at that persons table during lunch and sing to them. Soon after she met people she was invited to join the cheer leading squad. She accepted, but some soon began to regret it. At the basketball games she would cheer for both their team and the opposition. She said that there was a time for winning and a time for losing. She was such a happy girl and always did things for others and put them before herself. Well the two boys had their own show called the Hot Seat that aired on school grounds, and what do you know they get Stargirl to be on the show. The main reason they wanted her to be on the show is so that they could see if she was real or fake. A girl named Hillari Kimble got it in almost all the students heads that she was a source of entertainment put there at school by the faculty. The day of the show was the worse day ever. They put her on the spot and threw questions at her. They treated her like if she was an outsider and made her feel horrible. After that day Stargirl was still the same. She was still kind but she obeyed more what everybody told her. She no longer cheered for the opposite team but she was still the most kind person she could be. On every holiday she would leave everyone in her homeroom a little something that they could enjoy. Than soon came Valentines Day and she did the same thing but this time she also left Leo a card in his notebook. He didn't know what to do. The letter said “I LOVE YOU” and was signed with a star and a girl. He wondered if she had given anybody else a letter so he asked Kevin if he got one but...
