1) What was the dilemma that they are facing?
There are dilemma that both of the main character faced in the short story and movie. In the short story “Story of an hour “, the dilemma is when the main character, Mrs. Mallard is confused about her feeling whether she should be happy or sad about her husband’s death. She feels happy because she is now free and she can do whatever she wants to do. She is now also having the freedom that she dreamt. She didn’t really love her husband anyway. That can be seen when she said that “and yet she had loved him—sometimes”. It shows that she is also doubt about her love towards her husband. But at the same time, she feels sad about her husband’s death because he have been kind to her. As for the movie “The Color Purple”, the dilemma is Celie felt confused whether she wants to fight her husband or just follow her husband’s order. She was too scared towards men. She is always been bullied and just follow whatever people asked her to do. She was really scared to her husband, Mr. Johnson. She did not have the power and strength to fight her husband and she just be patience to live her life.


2) How they choose to manage their dilemma?
Mrs. Mallard keep thinking positively to manage her dilemma. She thinks about the benefits from her husband’s death. The biggest effect is the freedom that she will get. As we can see in the short story, “She said it over under her breath: “free, free, free!” Mrs. Mallard is going to start a new life because she thought her husband was dead but surprisingly, her husband is still alive and he coming in from the door. For the movie the Color Purple, Celie choose to manage her dilemma by be patience. She has been treated like a slave by his own father and his husband. She got pregnant by his father twice and her baby was taken from her. She got scolded by her husband every day and get beat up every day. She do not have the strength to fight back and she...
