Strategic Planning and the Nursing Process
Nursing as a profession has evolved over the years. This once emotionally driven profession has now utilized a systematic understanding of how care is delivered in health care organizations. The modern nurse must be able to understand and implement strategic planning through a system that is similar to the nursing process. Through using informatics as a resource tool, both processes may, more easily, accomplish organizational missions. This essay will compare the strategic planning process with the nursing process, as well as, identify the nurse's role in both processes and describe how nurses can become more involved in strategic planning in informatics.
Strategic Planning and the Nursing Process
“Strategic planning represents a fundamental tool for outlining, putting in practice, controlling and assessing actions so as to result in positive changes.” (Costa & Isabel, 2009, para.). Strategic planning is a process and a management tool that allows an organization to consciously move forward into the future by developing yearly objectives, tasks, and plans in order to reach these goals. The mission is the purpose for the organization’s existence and represents any unique aspects that it may have. It is important to understand that strategic planning is ongoing and guided by upper-level administrators. The strategic plan identifies the need for change. Goals and scope are then developed and through data analysis, informatics, scanning internal and external environments, as well as, identification of potential solutions; a course of action is selected, implemented, evaluated, and then feedback is given.
