Between the 1500’s and 1800’s there were many European nations that contributed, adapted, and failed to adapt to the development of modern Europe. Within these nations the Republic of Holland and France had various factors that supported the adaptation to this era and in some cases failed to adapt. In addition, these nations also had different styles of development that provided the Republic of Holland and France with strengths and weaknesses.
The major difference between these two nations is their political structure. The Republic of Holland has a decentralized government with no king or queen and it is referred to as an oligarchy. The government was local and there was at least one representative in every city and in every town. Being able to have and maintain a federal republic allowed the establishment of equality within the citizens to a certain extent. This type of government permitted the Republic of Holland to advance in the modernization of Europe. On the other hand, France had a different type of government. The French nation was an empire of absolute monarchy making it a centralized government. One absolute monarch was Louis XIV who was well respected and ruled for seventy years. The building of Versailles and usage of propaganda directed by Chapelain made Louis the XIV more powerful and made the French nation to gain strength. However, This type of government made it impossible for the citizens to have a sort of freedom and refused the idea of changing their regime.
Another major difference was the technological advances each nation had. The Republic of Holland possessed great engineers that aided to the building of ships. It was also the first nation to create public street lighting by the inventor Jan van der Heyden. He also initiated an improvement to the fire fighting services, in which he improved the hoses and innovated this invention by attaching it to the horses.
