Study Links Television and Depression
The article, “Study Links Television and Depression” by Karen Kaplan discusses how television can be the strongest cause of depression. The author K. Kaplan shares with us how a group of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard Medical School viewed their opinions and findings on how watching television can be the cause of depression, lack of sleep, anxiety, feeling inadequate or worthless and many others feelings. Dr. Brain Primack states that “It could be argued that people with predilection for later development of depression also happen to have a predilection for watch lot of TV”. Dr. Primack identify an interest word “Predilection” which means a tendency to think favorably of something in particular; preference. The word Predilection made me start to wonder is television really the cause or effect of depression or is it a cover up for happiness. This is something that I would like to explore and elaborate on.
Before you can identify the cause of something you must first understand what it means. Depression is when someone is feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless and lots of sadness. Depression can come in many different symptoms such as insomnia, wanted to be left alone, lack of brain activity, and loss of interest in activities or hobbies that was once pleasurable to you. Now that we have a better understanding of depression; I can clear say people that are already depressed or have no other options of extra curriculum may watch more television simply because it does not requires any effort and does not need any company to do so. Remember the word Predilection? This word means thinking of something favorably, do something that you particular what to do, something you prefer to be doing; not because you are depressed.
