Values are things, ideas, beliefs, principles and quality that people and society attaches great importance to. It also includes what we like and don’t like (dislike) people to attribute or associate us with. It involves a more personal measure of worth such as how one sees oneself (self-esteem) or how important one considers certain things, beliefs, principles and ideas. It also means the actual worth of an object or item in monetary terms.
Sources of values
We derive our values from many sources. This includes
Our family circle, school, community, churches/mosques, cultural heritage, wealth of experience, press, radio, television, newspapers and other publications etc.
Types of values
For man to live a peaceful and worthy life, he needs value in order to differentiate for himself what is bad since it is universally said that values are the accepted norms, behaviours, beliefs, and practices that guide individuals in a society. Types of values are
1. Universal or society values: these are the norms, beliefs and principles which society has tested and approved and expects from its members. When something has the same value or worth for a or almost all, we say it has a universal value. Respect for human life is an example of universal value, honesty and transparency, justice and integrity.
2. Social values: these are principles and standards of human interactions within a given group that are regarded as an accepted mode of conduct. A set of social values of people in a particular community or state differ from the others in another society.
3. Personal/individual values: these are the beliefs values and philosophies that an individual holds about life, its purposes and your own purposes. Examples are, discipline, integrity, tolerance, truth, self-reliance etc.
