Throughout this book, Nineteen Minutes by Jodie Picoult Josie our main character keeps many secrets from her mother, friends, the judge, and detective Patrick. After the catastrophe that took place Josie and her mother had a difficult time understanding each other. Josie told her mother that she was going to be tutoring for a few mornings out of the week. Alex, Josie’s mother loved the sound of this because she thought that this would get Josie’s mind off of everything that had happened, including the death of her boyfriend. The only thing about all of this was that Josie’s “tutoring” was a white lie.
Patrick knew that something was up when he heard that Josie was tutoring so one morning he followed the city bus to her hiding spot, and to his surprise Josie was actually going to the cemetery to see Matt. Josie would spend hours there just laying on the ground and talking to him as if he was right next to her. When it was time for Josie to say good-bye she walked down the hill toward the gates, and standing at his car with his arms crossed was Patrick. Josie was in shock and didn’t know what say because she didn’t want anyone to know that this was her destination when she was trying to cope with her problems. Patrick understood everything and told Josie that he wouldn’t tell Alex about anything, but she needed to know that her mother loved and cared about her very much. "Josie nodded and burst into tears. She turned away, embarrassed, and then felt Patrick fold his arms around her. He didn't say anything, and for that one moment, she even liked him." (p.347) Patrick was there to listen to everything that she had to say, and he let her just cry because he knew that’s what he needed. Josie didn’t really “like” Patrick because he was trying to date Alex and Josie didn’t want anything else in her life right now, but after that day she began to like Patrick because he related to her and never judged her.
