HI 111 ESSAY ASSIGNMENTS: All students must do one practice essay that will not be graded, plus three essay assignments that will be graded.


PRACTICE ESSAY

The practice essay on a set question will be written in stages and peer-reviewed. This will take place over the first 4 weeks of the semester, and will be completed by 9/10 September. It will serve as a model for how to do history assignments in this class. You will be expected to apply what you learn to the assignments that you do for grade. It is also expected that you will be thinking seriously about those assignments even while you are working on the practice essay.
The stages will include
a. an analysis of the question being posed
b. determining a preparation strategy
c. gathering resources
d. coming up with a thesis
e. an analysis of a primary source and how to use it for the essay
f. the appropriate use textbooks

h. the appropriate use of a non-textbook
i. the appropriate use of a web source
j. how to make reference notes and compile a bibliography
k. how to organize the essay
l. writing and revisions

Although there is no grade for this, failure to participate fully will result in significant deductions from your final course grade. This is a good learning opportunity, so take advantage of it. Pretend it=s a Areal@ essay and follow all the rules for real essays.

GRADED ASSIGNMENTS: FULL DETAILS ARE FOUND ON B/B. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ACQUAINTED WITH THEM.

OPTIONS: There are four types [options] of essay assignment. You must submit a total of 3 assignments, one of which MUST come from Option 1. The remaining two may come from Options 1, 2, 3 or 4 - your choice. The Option 1 essay does NOT need to be the first essay you hand in.
