Sylvia Plath
Throughout the second half of this contemporary poetry course, I have found myself immersed in the fine writings of various poets. These gifted poets have allowed me to feel a vast array of emotions that quite frankly, I never thought could be achieved through reading words on a page. From Plath to Hass, these selected poets obviously have a knack for achieving their goals through poetry. They are able to move their readers by simply allowing them an opportunity to see inside their own heads. Through this unique reversed introspection technique, I now fully realize the power poetry is able to have upon readers and understand why poetry can be a very cathartic release for many people. However, every person on this planet is able to form opinions, and consequently, individuals enjoy some poets better then others. Such is the case with me. Additionally, some poets have the privilege of being able to relate to their readers on a more personal level than others. Based on these two assumptions, the poet that was able to shine brighter than any other, to me, was Sylvia Plath.
Plath seems to write her poems based off of her own life experiences. This allows her to become one with her poems. To me, this is important because it allows Plath to really seem as though she is intimately connected with her poetry. It shows a passion for what she does, which is something I really respect and admire. In her poem ‘Stillborn’ Plath seems to mourn over the fact that her poems will never come to life. She also refers to herself as the ‘mother’ of her poems. Plath is what is known as a confessional poet meaning she actually confesses things that she would otherwise feel uncomfortable speaking of in everyday conversation. This goes along with the fact that Plath bases her poetry off of her own experiences, joys, hates, triumphs and defeats. I believe that this fact gives Plath’s poems a personal quality to them.
