I. INTRODUCTION
Tourism plays an important role in every country’s economy. Depending on how well it is
managed, it represents a significant income to the country. In Taiwan, tourism is growing
very fast. In a half century it has grown from 15000 to 2 million visitors per year; and they
mainly come from East Asia, Japan, United States and Europe. This is fair enough a reason
for the government to encourage and promote it as the best way to display Chinese culture
(Hudman and Jackson) However, there are several negative aspects that affirm the fact that
tourism has a negative impact on Taiwanese’s culture. Xenophoby, prostitution, and
crime, are basic examples of it.
II. FACTS ABOUT TAIWAN’S TOURISM
Taiwan is a mountainous island, with the highest non-Himalayan mountains, and tropical
beaches, in North East Asia. Moreover, it has important tourist sites, such as Northern,
Central and Southern Taiwan, where you can visit from temples, to national parks, and
modern cities surrounded by verdant rice paddies. This conditions, give the island a
spectacular view of landscapes, which attracts so many tourists.
III. POSITIVE EFFECTS OF TOURISM IN TAIWAN
As it is known for many, tourism provides a better live level to all those who work in this
industry, and all countries that focuses on it. It generates employment and contributes to the
local economies (Recreation and Tourism: Positive effects, 2000). Taiwan has taken good
advantage of tourism, that is why its economy has rised up in the passed few years....
