When working in a team and employee has both the good and the bad to deal with. In the perfect scenario the leader of the team would all ready be designated. The team lead is given sole autonomy from the manager in selecting his or her team. In some cases however the manager selects the employees to work in the group as a team. The team is a gathering of individuals with a task but without a leader and without a plan.
There is an advantage to have the predetermined team lead that has been able to select the team. There would be an all ready thought out chemistry and understanding of the hierarchy in the team in being predetermined. The mission and goal of the team would be more clearly focused with a team lead that had selected his or her own team. “Directing followers towards a common goal and visioning a pathway to furnish it is key to gaining a successful portfolio of leadership skills.” (Lee-Davies, 2007, Shared Leadership)
By operating in a team, it is letting the company view the team and observe the team members and evaluating those that may be future leaders. “By ensuring that the energy, efforts and ability of the whole team is channeled upwards in a positive way, and therefore directly contributes to and augments corporate performance, team members can see their influence at work and really are fully participative.” (Lee-Davies, 2007, Shared Leadership)
The disadvantage of a team created by a manager with no established leader is the lack of hierarchy and organization. There is an increased risk and possibility of infighting without leadership from the onset of the team.
Another disadvantage of working in a team is that “instead of using every effort to turn out the largest possible amount of work, in a majority of the cases this man deliberately plans to do as little as he safely can - to turn out far less work than he is well able to do” (Vermeulen, 2003, A Reverse Side)
