UNINTENDED SOCIAL EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media can be explained as websites and applications that enable communication among many users and enable this users “to create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content, such as videos” (Merriam-Webster). Social Media has These Social networks social networks possess different functionalities and tools to build support for a cause, most users are not really aware of privacy controversy, compromised control of personal information posted on such online networks, exposure to content, predatory behavior and exposure to strangers that they should never have been exposed to. (Onduno, 2012).
Of course, not all consequences of Social media are negative. Social media can allow users to find friends, empathy, speedy communications, stay in touch with the world, build relationships and find common ground on an open society among other things. (Parrack, 2012). Wallace (2014) explains that, for example, most comments other persons make on your posts (such as selfies) make them feel more confident.
Interestingly though, we seem to have more information on the negative effects of social media than the positive effects. Social media facilitates cyberbullying (procon.org, 2016), but there are many other consequences many people are not even informed of, such as the case of a company that announced through social media that they were moving their distribution warehouse to a new facility and ended up with interlopers stealing more than $1 Million in equipment and inventory (Zetlin, 2011)
Concerns about new technologies are not new to society. Since most people have integrated it to their daily life social media has become a disruption, and though some people fear these technologies, these social networks are being embraced more and more over time. (Onduno, 2012)
