Technology Affecting Socialization

There are many different type of people in the world, some introverted, some extroverted. One thing that every person both shy and outgoing has in common, is the need to communicate. Every year people across the globe are developing new technology purely meant to enhance our means of communicating. It started with the simple use of our vocal chords and the development of language, and now has expanded all the way to the new ages things such as texting and instant messaging. To someone of an age much greater than my own, these newfangled toys may be found to be difficult, distracting, and even maybe a waste of money. But to those smart enough to take advantage of these things, it brings about a whole new place: the Virtual World. Inside this virtual word are new opportunities, new friends, and a new way to keep life-long friendships.
My mother constantly tells me to pick the phone up and actually call someone for once, instead of just texting. What she doesn’t realize is at one time, her parents were thinking “Why doesn’t she put the phone down and walk to her friend’s house?” Texting, IMing, E-mailing, and video chatting are all extremely useful and important inventions, and these inventions never stop being updated. Who knows what could be advertized tomorrow? Another thing my mother tends to say is that “kids these days won’t know how to hold a real conversation without a keyboard in front of them!” That is extremely untrue. If anything, it gives us a way to practice conversing with another individual without the pressure of their eyes or judgment directly upon us. This way, when it comes time to converse in person, we have a mild understanding on how they may or may not react to a certain subject or statement.
Every day, people are making new friends thanks to social networking. Not only may these people become life-long friends, but they may also become employers. There are countless music artists who became famous with the sole help of the internet. All...
