Communication technology has added a new dimension to a company’s ability to deliver their messages more quickly, efficiently and effectively. Businesses today have access to a treasure chest of communication technology tools such as email, instant messaging, social media, podcasting, blogging, web conferencing and video streaming. Social media is responsible for significant shifts in the ways that businesses communicate with customers and employees. But what shifts will social media bring to business communication in the future? Before that question can be answered, let us look at the impacts of social media in today’s business environment.
Today’s Social Media Environment
There are a variety social media technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Skype, LinkedIn and other professional networking sites. These technologies offer a variety of communication benefits including marketing, interoffice communications, and professional networking.
Facebook and Twitter offer companies they ability to market at no cost. Businesses can offer deals to Facebook users that “like” their page while running contests on Twitter that engages current customers and quickly reaches out to new ones (How your business can benefit from social media, 2013).
Google+ and Skype assist companies with not only interoffice communications but with communication to clients. Google+ and Skype allow for instant messaging or video and voice conferencing. Skype allows users to host webinars.
LinkedIn and other professional networking sites provide companies with the ability to share thoughts and ideas among professionals.
