What are the positive and negative impacts of technology in the workplace?
In human society, technology is a broad concept that ties to science and environment. It deals with our usage of knowledge and tools including machines, hard wares or utensils. But technology also includes general themes such as systems, techniques or methods of organization. Technology gets specific when applied to areas like “medical technology”, “construction technology” or “information technology” (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2012). In today’s world, technology is constantly evolving from a new door knob to an improvement in communication device. It lets people focus on the important factors in life while technology improves the way they live. Some people focus on finding improvements in environment and the well-being of our planet and some people focus on creating new management systems and methods. Technology is important in everyone’s life because it constantly changes what’s available on the market. In a working environment, changes in technologies are as important in order to remain competitive.
Computer use and other electronic devices are prevalent in many workplaces. Some companies find virtually impossible working without them. Through the years, technology in the workplace became an important part of how companies do business and how workers perform their job tasks. It has revolutionized the workplace and redefined companies’ practices (Joseph, 2012). Today, our use of computers, information technology applications, is commonplace. The recent introduction of web-based, cloud based applications as well as the evolution of telecommunication technologies has taken the capabilities to another level, where benefits and possibilities are endless (Dutta, 2012).
