Technology in World War I was a major key factor. Before aviation technology this pilots would either just fly for reconnaissance or they would shoot handheld guns at each other, sometimes they would just throw spears at each other which was very unsuccessful. After technology of the airplane pilots now had machine guns equipped on their planes. Also, the interrupter gear was created which allowed pilots to mount a gun right behind their propeller allowing the pilot to fire along his flight path. Due to the stalemate in the war on the ground planes were used to gather intelligence about enemy locations.
Tanks were another huge leap in Would War I. World War I was the first major war where tanks were used greatly. Again, due to the trench stalemate armies had to start mass production of tanks to get anywhere in the war because trench warfare wasn’t doing anything but getting more and more people killed. The British were the first to create a tank, having their first created in September 1915. The French were also fast to develop a tank, they had their first one in 1917. The Germans however concentrated more on anti-tank guns than actual tanks.
Also due to technology submarines were used for the first time in a war. Because the British relied heavily on imports to feed their people and arm their armies the Germans tried to cutoff their supplies by placing their submarines, which were called U-Boats, out to sea. Whenever a supplies ship was seen by the Germans it was immediately sunk. The British tried to outsmart the Germans by placing citizens on the deck of the ship and putting their supplies below the deck. The German sunk one actual civilian ship, The Lusitania, which brought the United States into the war. Later the British started to protect these convoy ships by having armored vessels escort them.
