Operating System also known as (OS) is the first thing loaded into the computer without the Operating System the computer will be of no use. According to Patterson, the main purpose of an OS is to be in charge and organize hardware and software so that the machine it lives in can behave in a manageable and predictable way. The operating system consists of a master system that manages the essential operations of the computer. The operating systems controls, the use of hardware resources, memory, disk space peripheral devices, and CPU time allowance. They are three components of system software, the user, applications software (spread sheets, word processor), and system software (operating system).
According to Patterson, operating systems have four essential roles. The initial function is the interface among the computer and client. In this interface the operating system allows the user to start applications and manage the information in the computer, including deleting, or copying files. Through operating system interface the user can view the system resources, for instance how much hard disk space is available as well as RAM (random access memory) availability. The second function of OS is the running application software. To do so the software should be well-matched to the operating system. The operating system can run software with earlier operating systems this is called backward compatibility. The third function of the OS is to control the hardware. The basic function is to obtain input from input devices like keyboard, and send output to output devices like the printer.
