Smartphones have a positive effect on education. The New York Times recently stated “smartphone apps are increasingly being used to help people access education and health services” (Cell phones). This shows there are apps on smartphones that are helping people get educational services. Having these services close by will give people to access countless opportunities. At home students can use the calculator on their smartphone. Also they can e-mail teachers for help on assignments. In the article “Mobile Devices Address Technology Equity in Africa” the author says “In South Africa, students are text-chatting with math tutors by cell phone for help with their homework” (Davis). This means students in South Africa are using their smartphones to text their tutors for help with work. Having the ability to contact a teacher or tutor from home could really benefit towards student’s grades.
Computers and the internet have a positive effect on education. In the article “Education” from the book American Decades the authors says “On October 3, 2005 the Open Content Alliance announces their plan to digitize thousands of books and scholarly papers, making them available on the Internet”(Education). This allows students to access thousands of textbooks and school documents at home without them carrying everything around. Students not having to carry around heavy textbooks in their backpacks will keep them from straining their backs, and having back pain when they’re older. In the article “Teenagers' Social Networking Found to Have Educational Benefits in Poll” by Catherine Gewertz a poll by the Alexandria, Va. based National School Boards Association states “The online survey of 1,277 9 to 17-year-olds found that 50 percent said they talk specifically about their schoolwork when they text-message by cellphone, or use their computers... Nearly six in 10 said they discuss education-related topics, including college or college planning, careers, and jobs.”(Gewertz). This...
