1. Introducing “Community”

My term paper is about a TV series called ‘Community’. The series is broadcasted on NBC since 2009 and is very popular in the United States and also in other parts of the world. It uses lots of meta-humour and often refers to pop culture, for example when parodying film and television clichés. In one episode they even parody the TV series ‘Glee’, which we handled in class this semester.
“Community” was named TV Guide Magazine’s fan-favourite comedy and its fan-favourite ensemble on April 10th 2012.
It is about a group of the Greendale Community College students who get mixed in a study group by default rather than by design and within time get good friends beyond their “college-friendship”. Although the characters of the series distinguish by their behaviour and habits as well as their ethnicity, they have one thing in common: their failed past. They try to build up a new life after having messed up their former life because of various reasons.


2. Motivation for choice

I chose this topic, because I can identify with the series, because it is similar to our university experiences. I furthermore think that other students of my seminar or even my future pupils can also identify with it in many ways. There are some aspects that you can compare to the every day life within the university. I think the series has also a message you can read between the lines: It tries to show that you cannot always be strict but have to enjoy your time at university.
