Response To Lit. Essay “Thank-You Ma'm”
There was a large women with a huge purse that looked like it would have everything inside of it. It had a long strap that carried across her shoulder. It was about 10 o'clock at night, walking alone, when a boy ran up and tried to grab her purse. The strap broke with a little tug, but the boy lost balance and fell on the rough black street with no cars driving by. He didn't take off as regular criminals do. The lady looked back, turned around and kicked him in his blue jean sitter. In the short story “Thank-You Ma'm”, Langston Hughes writes how an old lady affects Roger's life. From the elderly lady taking the little boy home, washing his face and feeding him, he learns how to be kind to others by using the main manners. Roger tried to steal the ladies purse, but the lady still treats him with respect. Even though he didn't think about what he was doing, the lady tries to teach him how to treat others the way he would like to be treated.
Showing kindness can help others when Mrs. Jones wants the boy to wash his dirty face, but she helps him instead. On page 19, the lady said then it will be washed before or during night time. “ Then it will be washed this evening”, said the large lady. The boy needs to clean his face within now and evening or else the lady will clean him. The boy should be so thankful for the lady caring for him. Also on page 20, the lady wants him to wash his face, but she drags him. "Roger, you go to that sink and wash your face," said the woman. Roger looked at the door, looked at the woman, and went to the sink. The lady was nice enough to tell him that he needed to wash his face, because shes never seen a face like that. Roger had to wait until the water got warm then he started to clean himself. Roger bent over the sink and washed off. Then the lady was being kind by giving him a clean towel to dry off.
