← Thesis: Anne Sexton is the author of some of the first truly feminist poetry. What is Confession? By definition confession is the ritual of discourse in which the speaking subject is also the subject of the statement. Anne Sexton is said by some to be the greatest confessional poet of all time. Her well-documented life helps us to analyze her work. Anne Sexton used personal experiences and symbols in her writing to connect to the reader through a confessional style.

- Sexton was an American poet. She began her career was a poet at the age of 29. As a direct result of Anne Sexton's natural talent, one year after she started writing, Sexton's poems were published. Anne Sexton was influenced by a number of people, including: fellow poet, Sylvia Plath; friend, Maxine Kuman; and mentor, Robert Lowell. Anne Sexton achieved a great deal in her short life. She won numerous awards for her poetry, such as the Radcliffe Scholarship for Independent Study, the Ford Foundation Grant, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Shelley Memorial Award. Through her poetry Sexton dealt with matters such as her mental illness, her sexuality, her parents, and her children. Haunted by and personal anguish, Sexton's poems speak openly of a dark and unhappy world. Sexton was tormented by a lot of things in her life: her unhappy childhood, bad relationship with her father, abortion, attempted suicide, parent’s death, failed marriage, and motherhood made up Sexton's poetry.
