The Community and Literature

Literature can be any form of written material. Literature in the community brings different forms of communication to a variety a people. It is an entertainment that can take you through an author’s view on the world. An author can bring out different feelings in people while reading literature. Different readers may not get the same impressions when reading the same piece of literature. Literature provides readers with new information. Reading literature enhances the awareness of other cultures around the world.
Literature can bring out experiences from the authors point of view. Authors will create a story to make others aware of different morals and values that communities practice. The story “The Lesson” by Toni Bambara, uses children to teach readers about a community. The children live in a poor neighborhood and Miss Moore volunteers her teaching services to the children over the summer. The parents and children think that Miss Moore is different from the others in the neighborhood. Sylvia, the main character describes Miss Moore with nappy hair proper speech and no make-up” (DiYanni, 2007). Miss Moore feels that these children need to know more about what is just learned in their neighborhood. She really wants them to see a different side of the world and give these children some hope
She takes them on a field trip to an expensive toy store to teach them the value of money. The children can easily see that the toys in the toy store are expensive and are not like the toys they have at home. While looking at a sailboat that cost one thousand one hundred ninety-five dollars, the children make statements such as, “Unbelievable”, Who’d pay all that when you can buy a sailboat set for a quarter at Pops”, and “My sailboat cost me fifty cents” (DiYanni, 2007 pg. 430).
