Throughout the history of the United States of America their has been many hot-button debated issues. Every topic from world war to healthcare has been talked about in the halls of Congress, but the issue that has plagued America the longest is illegal immigration. Ever since the early 1900's, illegal immigration has caused high debate among everyone it effects. Which is, if you think about it, every single person in this nation. Back then though, the problem it created was crime rates. Immigrants flocked to major cities, and majority of mob members and crime leaders came to the nation illegally in search of fortune. Today crime rates are still abnormally high among illegals, but experts are more concerned with it's effects on our economy. Experts also maintain that if anyone can cross our borders illegally, what's stopping potential terrorists from making their way to our homeland. What needs to be addressed are solutions to stop illegal immigration, to not only protect our money, but to also protect ourselves. Three possible solutions that experts have come up with are building a wall along the border, targeting businesses that hire illegally, and fixing the Green Card process.
In the recent decades, the most popular solution to shut down illegal immigration was to build a massive wall along the southern border of the United States, and the Northern border of Mexico. John King, a reporter for CNN.com, recently published his research and opinion. In 2006, with the support of then Senator Barack Obama, 670 miles of fencing stretching from California to Texas was approved by Congress (King, 1). So far, according to local border patrol men where the fences have been completed, the wall is a large success. Patrolman Mike Lowrie says that, “In the Yuma Sector, we would get about 800 a day. Now, 25 maybe, or 10.” He continued to claim that “Numbers don't lie... This used to be a very high-trafficked area, and now it is not” (King, 1). Even with the success though,...
