Arthur Miller's The Crucible Essay by Aleksander Abildgaard Write a short summary of the play ‘The Crucible’: The Crucible takes place in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, in the spring of 1692. The people of Salem is almost obsessively Christian, and therefore, in their own eyes, righteous. The towns traditions makes having fun an utter sin, and even thinking of not going to church regularly, brings your devotion to Christianity to question. The girls is lead by the strong and coldblooded; Abigail, who sees this chaotic situation, as a way to get her hands on her beloved John Proctor, who she, some time ago, had an affair with, even though he was, and still is, married with Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail knows that Elizabeth’s maid, is sewing a puppet for Elizabeth, and that she has planted a needle in it for safekeeping, so she sticks another needle on her own belly, and claims that Elizabeth, through the puppet, has sent out her evil spirit to stab her. This makes Mary admit to Proctor, that the invasion of the Devil has all been pretence. Together they go to court to confront the girls. However, when Mary confesses, the girls blames her being linked with Satan, and because of this, Mary snaps, and starts blaming Proctor of helping Satan destroy the court. Proctor is taking into custody, and refuses to turn to the Lord, whom he thinks has abandoned the town of Salem. After Proctors arrest, Abigail flees from the city, and it´s obvious that the entire city, has been deceived by a pack of girls. Hathorne, who won´t admit that the court has been killing innocent people in the name of a lie, feels he must carry out the execution of Proctor, unless he confesses his alliance with Satan, or the credibility of the system will collapse. But because Proctor refuses to throw away his honor, he gets hanged, like the dozens of others who refused to surrender to a lie.
