Cyanide. Cyanide can kill in matter of seconds; do you think the inside of a nectarine can kill you? What if I told you that nectarine pits contain cyanide? Would you still think that it’s not poisonous?
What is respiration?
Enzymes in cells catalyse photosynthesis, protein synthesis, joining amino acids together, and aerobic respiration. Aerobic respiration is a metabolic process where oxygen is taken in and water and carbon dioxide produced. Energy is created when food is broken down using oxygen. Anaerobic respiration is where in the absence of oxygen, organic compounds and sugar is broken down to produce energy. Anaerobic respiration is a form of respiration other than oxygen. Although oxygen is not used as the final electron acceptor, the process still uses a respiratory electron transport chain; it is respiration without oxygen.
What is Cyanide?
Cyanide is a mitochondrial toxin that makes it difficult for your blood cells to carry oxygen throughout your body. It is usually found as a solid or a gas, and may smell like almonds. You may be accidently exposed, or it may be used as a weapon. Cyanide poisoning can have severe symptoms and be life-threatening. Cyanide can be inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. Cyanide is one of the most harmful things if you are exposed to it .Gas may be created as a chemical reaction when a building is on fire. The chemical may leak from a nearby building where cyanide is used. The soil, groundwater, and well water may become contaminated. Food grown in soil or water containing cyanide may also contain it e.g. In pits of nectarines or cassava roots. Cyanides symptoms can be dangerous and cause death e.g. itching of the eyes, nausea or vomiting, headache or seizure, weakness dizziness or possibly you can faint, very fast or very slow heart beat and death.
