The Differences Between the Have and the Have-Nots

The Land of Opportunities America is the promised land of equality, freedom, and justice. Maybe this is the case in legal terms, but if looked at closely there are many injustices going on that are not prohibited by our constitution. Perhaps the most obvious one is the difference between the rich and the poor or the haves and the have-nots. In today’s world income inequality is not only viewed in terms of average income/wealth, but as the unbalanced distribution of education, health care, productivity, and participation in politics. Gudrais states, “High inequality reverberates through societies on multiple levels, correlating with, if not causing, more crime, less happiness, poor mental and physical health, less social harmony, and less civic and political participation.” Alesina believes that the increase in crime has a clear explanation, but is often misinterpreted. As the incomes of the rich and poor differ, so do their personal interests. “Members of a relatively equal society find it relatively easy to reach agreement about what the purpose and priorities of a legal system should be. But if the rich favor protecting property, while the poor came more about preventing punishing interpersonal violent crime, the lack of consensus will produce a weak system that fails to meet the desires of either,” states Alesina. In regard to political participation, the poor seek out politicians and parties who support redistribution, but the wealthy favor parties who do not support redistribution. The problem with this is that the wealthy have a much greater voter turnout than the poor therefore the parties who the wealthy favor are chosen leaving the poor at a disadvantage.
