The Earth and its Environment

As technology advances, the atmosphere surrounding our Mother Earth deteriorates. Everyone is responsible in one way or another for the destruction of Earth’s environment as we are all involved in polluting the air, which in turn is destroying the ozone. Since life on Earth is supported by its environment, everyone needs to play an important role in preserving its natural resources. To assure we all contribute to the well-being of our planet, one day in the spring of each year has been dedicated to show our appreciation for Earth and the wonderful environment it provides for all its living creatures, known as Earth Day. The first Earth Day was observed in 1970 when residents saw signs of serious trouble; the Cuyahoga River in Ohio was reported to catch fire because it had become so polluted. Other incidents leading to the observance of Earth Day included the permanent evacuation of the Love Canal neighborhood of Niagara Falls, NY when a chemical dump was discovered just below the topsoil, Bald Eagles were decreasing toward extinction. An Administrator for the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Steve Johnson, mentioned that “air pollution was so thick that in some cities people had to change their shirts twice a day.”[i] However, many people forget all about Earth Day as it comes and goes, so Many organizations believe that Earth and its environment should be taken care of everyday and not just be focused on only one day out of the whole year.
Keeping the Earth happy and healthy all year long can be very simple by just practicing a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. For example, the car one chooses to drive can make a massive impact on the welfare of our environment, and even when a person fills up his/her gas tank and drives the speed limit can make a difference.
