Teaching is a long process that involves various types of methods, approaches and techniques, while Learning is about how we perceive and understand the world and make meaning of what is available. There exist several ways how teach foreign languages depending on the teacher, learner and the context. As a personal experience, I have been studying English for almost seven years. Each teacher had his/her own method and pedagogy. What those teachers had in common is that they made of themselves the central authority in class, without allowing the students to express themselves, or feel at ease during the course of learning. Most teachers did not teach English for the sake of communication, since the majority of activities were concentrated on writing and reading rather than speaking. Some teachers gave lessons in English since the mother tongue (Arabic) was not allowed in the classroom except for some cases where the teacher was obliged to address students using Arabic. The fact the some teachers did use Arabic while explaining created a kind of obstacle, since students at a certain point could not keep up with the explanation and could barely understand what the teacher was talking about. Other teachers taught English using another foreign language, French. Some students had difficulties since they did not master the French language, so they found themselves lost between two foreign languages, which affected badly their learning and even the way they conceive English. Other teachers gave their lessons using Arabic. Students were given comprehension passages in English and the teacher translated the words, which the students did not know into Arabic. Even though this method made learning easier for students, its outcomes were not fully effective, as far as learning in viewed as a formation habit.
