The Evolution of Storage Technology
Information Storage and Management has been a popular topic every sense men have been trying to store and protect their valuable data. Since then there has been a tremendous amount of improvement in the technology we use to store and protect data from physical losses to malicious online attacks. Today you see technology such as, Direct-Attached Storage (DAS), Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network-Attached Storage (NAS), and Internet Protocol Storage Area Network (IP-SAN). This paper should give you a good idea of what technologies are being used to meet the many different challenges of storing and managing valuable data.
You will learn how Storage Management has overcome its challenges by evolving from non-intelligent internal storage to intelligent network storage. (Shrivastava, Somasundaram, 2009, Chapter 1, Page 9).
Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) is still used in small and medium size business storage requirements. Direct-Attached Storage provides localized storage requirements. Direct-Attached Storage has limitations on data flow and availability. It is not commonly used as an enterprise storage solution. DAS has a topology where storage connects directly to the server. DAS works very well for localized data access and sharing in environments that have a small number of servers. DAS requires a low initial investment, configuration is simple, and it coan be set up fast and easy. It...
