Extra Credit: Audiences in the Globe Theatre
The Globe Theatre offered a great place for entertainment for people of all shapes, sizes, colors, and even social classes. It could be called. “A little world where the highest people on the social scale could mingle with the lowest guttersnipes known to London. On play days, the streets outside the Globe were packed with many visitors and vendors could nearly sell-out of their products and refreshments. Although the Globe attracted all types of people, it particularly attracted young people, even to the pint of complaints that these young people would skip apprenticeships to go to the theatre.
In the Globe, different social classes were divided. The general public, or groundlings, would just pay one penny and stand in what was called the pit of the Globe theatre. This pit could get very rowdy at times. Most gentry paid a penny more to sit in the gallery with cushions for comfort. Every gallery higher that you went, you would pay a penny more. The people who were willing to pay the most could sit in chairs on the stage itself! A strange fact is that a lot of rich women would wear a mask to hide their identity while in the Globe Theatre. All in all, the Globe Theatre was the place to be in the Elizabethan times in London. jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj
