Alexander Carter FYE 1103 Ms. Jones The Great Debaters In the movie The Great Debater, classroom etiquette was very different in this time. First of all the dress code was more professional. They wore suits and dresses to class instead of wearing skirts and gym shorts. Even if they were unsusessful in class they looked presentable. In the movie it even seemed the teacher was in full control. Students wait for teacher to enter class then are seated and get right to work. Not as much free time as in today’s class rooms. In the movie The Great Debaters, the relationship between student and instructor were very strong; more like mother and daughter or father and son. The instructor held meeting and practice in his home with his family and held a name to name basis with the parents. For example, when the instructor went to jail, all of his students were there to fight to bail him out. He held a part in the students educational and social life. I feel that the students experience beyond the class room did shape their ability to learn. Experiencing their instructor getting brutally beat, having to be their own instructor, the resin and lynching made learning hard. Once they seen how hard it really was to be an African American in the United States made them work even harder. The fact of being on hold because of the color of your skin makes you want to break down every barrier o become bigger and better. When the debate team had to go to Harvard on their own proved that I can’t shouldn’t be in a black’s person vocabulary. Every student has different study habits. Some study all the time, some nearly never but which way is the correct way? In all actuality there is no one correct way the way that best suits you.
