Accountability and management are hallmarks of any organization. Without it, any organization can fall apart. the heirarchy of the military is based on small unit leadership, where one individual is in change of a small team. that leader is accountable for all service members in that team. In the Marines, a corporal is the one in charge of the the team, and above him is a Sgt or above who is command of the teams in a platoon. And so on, up the heirarchy to company, battalion, regiment, and/or group. Accountability is keeping track of daily tasks, marines and appointments scheduled for the day.
Failure to keep track of your subordinates is basically the same as guaranteeing failure of your unit. As much as we want to be able to trust our subordinatess, the sad fact remains that unit leaders simply cannot afford to have their Marines walking out the door, unaccounted for. For this reason, unit leaders must have an effective way to keep track of Marines. There are other reasons that a good way to track Marines is necessary. A good sign in/ sign out roster will allow you to easily see what Marine is available, where they are, what time the left and what time was allocated to them. It will also show you what Marines are constanly on the move, and what Marines need to be monitored, or kept track of better.There are many different methods for tracking unit tasks. You can set up your own system, or you can ask your subordinates to set up a system that works for you and them. The Tag System is one of the easiest systems to use. Simply use a record book, and list all of the Marines that you have on hand. Put a tag next to their name, with a callsign for each Marine, and record that Marine in the book. When the Marine leaves or has an appointment, remove the tag, and place it your record book. At least once a hour, go through and check your Marines whereabouts and status.
