The book, The Hundred Secret Senses was written by known author of The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan. Her books have been published in more than twenty different languages. Tan was born in Oakland, California and was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her upbringing in one of America’s most populated areas reflect upon her work. Her books keep a familiar pattern of using dual settings of the United States and of China. As The San Diego Tribunesays “Tan brings the Chinese countryside to life with colorful landscapes, folk tales, and the tastes and smells of rural China.” Along with bringing in her heritage, “Tan is a wonderful storyteller…” (USA Today). She is also an expert at bringing her personal life into her books in numerous ways. Including the trip she takes to China with a loved one, owning a business, and the loss of a family member. Hundred Secret Senses hits all three. “But I still remember moments with him. Falling down a curly slide into his arms. Dredging the wading pool for pennies he had tossed in,” (The Hundred Secret Senses 4). In this excerpt Tan describes the memories of Olivia’s (main character) father, Jack Yee, and the life she had before his death. In reality, Tan lost her real father, John Tan, when she was fourteen years old. John Tan, like Olivia’s father came to America to escape China. Growing up without a father, by personal experience, is also hard, but most of us learn to how to deal with the losses we encounter. In both Tan’s and Olivia’s life, the dispute with their partners, their businesses either hinder or disappear. Tan graduated from San Jose State University receiving a bachelor and masters for a double major in English and Linguistics. With a partner, she started a business writing firm, providing speeches for salesmen and executives for large corporations. After an argument with her partner, who believed Tan should give up writing to concentrate on the management side of the business, Tan became a full-time freelance writer....
